When you go to college in a smaller town like Valley City, you start to appreciate the events that bring people together. One of my favorite things about being a student at Valley City State University is how connected the university feels to the Valley City community. That connection becomes especially clear every March when the North Dakota Winter Show takes place. It is the longest-running agricultural show in the state and something that completely transforms the atmosphere of town for a full week. Now that I’ve experienced it a few times, I totally get why locals and students make time for it every year.
When I first heard about the Winter Show, I did not think it would be something I would be excited about. I had never really been to an agricultural event, and I was not sure it would interest me. But after experiencing it firsthand, it has become something I genuinely look forward to each year. It is one of those events that surprises you with how much there is to do, see, and enjoy, no matter your background or interests.
The Winter Show features a little bit of everything. From livestock shows and tractor pulls to vendor booths and live demonstrations, there is always something going on. Even if you do not know much about agriculture, the event is fun to explore. Walking through the building you will see booths selling handmade home goods, locally made foods, jewelry, and artwork.
There is also a wide variety of exhibits showcasing North Dakota’s agricultural roots, which gives you a deeper appreciation for the state’s culture. The food is another reason many college students stop by. It has all the comfort and fun of fair food, with options like mini donuts, kettle corn, barbecue, and other classics. A lot of students drop by between classes or in the evenings just to grab something to eat and take a break from the usual routine.

One of the highlights of the event is the rodeo. Whether or not you are a rodeo fan, the experience is something you remember. The crowd energy, the skill of the riders, and the whole atmosphere make it exciting to watch. Even if you go in not knowing what to expect, it is hard not to get caught up in the action once you are there.
Aside from the rodeo, one of the highlights of the North Dakota Winter Show is the concert that takes place during the week of events. Held inside the main arena at the North Dakota Winter Show building, the concert brings in well-known country artists and draws a big crowd from both the Valley City area and surrounding towns.

It is one of the most highly anticipated nights of the week, offering live music, great energy, and a chance for everyone to unwind and enjoy time with friends. Whether you are a big fan of country music or just looking for something fun to do, the concert is always a memorable part of the Winter Show. It is another example of how the event blends tradition with entertainment and continues to be a central part of community life in Valley City.
But what makes the Winter Show really stand out is the way it brings the Valley City community together. You see people of all ages, college students, families, adults, local business owners, all enjoying the same event. It is a great example of what small-town life can offer when people come together. So if you are a student at VCSU or thinking about attending, know that there is more to college life than just campus events.
The North Dakota Winter Show is a perfect example of how a local tradition can become something you genuinely enjoy and look forward to. It’s a unique experience that reminds you that you’re in North Dakota, in a good way.
